We both are of the opinion that North Stradbroke Island is and always will be our favourite place to be – and have been regular visitors for the past 30 years. Our home on the Island has been used as a holiday destination for the past 18 years by our family and friends – all of whom share our view being that this is a magical place all year round.
Upon our retirement we decided to make this paradise our permanent home. We both love boating and fishing and exploring the beautiful beaches that Straddie has to offer.
The headland at Point Lookout is our favourite part of the island – a great place to relax and read – walk our little dog (aptly named ‘Straddie’) – or simply to admire the fantastic and ever-changing views out over the Pacific Ocean.
We both enjoy meeting new people and we look forward to sharing the Straddie experience with you in calm and peaceful surroundings, just a short distance from all the beautiful beaches at Point Lookout. We adore animals so encourage you to enjoy your stay with us together with your pet. Home Beach close-by is a pet friendly beach.
We look forward to meeting you and hope your time on the island is a memorable one.
The North Gorge walk at the north eastern end of Point Lookout is a must do during your stay at Straddie. The headland is the best vantage point for spotting marine life such as whales, dolphins, turtles, and manta rays. You may also run into a kangaroo or two on your way around.
Between June and November in excess of 2,000 Humpback Whales pass Straddie on their way to the calving grounds around the Whitsundays – later retuning to the Antarctic with their babies in tow, displaying regular breaches, powerful tail- slaps and water spouts as they surface.
Main Beach and Flinders Beach are the two beaches that can be accessible by FWD vehicles. A Permit is required (obtain at Information Centre Dunwich and various other locations at Point Lookout), and driving is prohibited one hour before and after high tide.
Straddie is one place that the seafood comes direct from the sea to the Island. Straddie Oysters, Moreton Bay and Ocean Prawns, Crabs and Fish are all in abundant supply in season. Trawlers deliver their catch daily so you are assured to eat the freshest seafood available. Seafood aside, there is plenty more to enjoy ranging from casual Cafés to A La Carte Restaurants. (Directly opposite us is Pandanus Palms Resort which has a Restaurant called ‘The Whales Way’). Free Courtesy Buses run frequently to the Straddie Hotel, The Surf Club and the Bowls Club to and from our location.
North Stradbroke Island is home to an extensive freshwater lake system. These waterways provide ecologically important wetlands and include Blue Lake, Brown Lake, the Keyholes, Eighteen Mile Swamp and Myora Springs. Blue Lake is a 2.5km walk from the car park. Please note there are no facilities at Blue Lake. Brown Lake is a great spot for a picnic and swim. It is fully accessible by vehicle and has picnic tables, BBQs and toilets.
The Point Lookout Sunday Markets located at the Community Hall (opposite the Bowls Club) is a great place to buy local products and produce – including arts and crafts, homemade jams and cakes, organic honey etc. Every second Sunday – Check here for details.
